WHY CALMM EXISTS
Reaching 6-figures proves that you can create and sell valuable work.
It doesn’t automatically teach you how to grow a company.
CALMM fills the education gap between:
→ turning your profession or craft into a successful founder-led business, and
→ building a commercially solid operation that gives you great pay, impact and freedom.
of women founders in one UK study said better work-life balance and more time for family motivated them to start a business.
of more than 250 founders in our own data said taking a genuine week away would be difficult or impossible.
of women-owned businesses reach 7 figures in annual revenue.
More women are starting businesses than ever before.
Women’s participation in UK entrepreneurship reached its highest recorded level in 2024.
That’s incredible progress.
More women are turning their expertise into valuable businesses, creating employment and beginning the journey of building wealth on their own terms.
But the number of women who start can’t be our only measure of success. We also have to ask what those businesses go on to create for the women running them.
What should we measure?
Do they generate healthy profit and meaningful personal wealth?
Can they perform when the founder steps away?
Does growth give her more choice or make more clients, people and decisions dependent on her?
Does the business eventually give back more than it takes?
For too many women, the answer is: not yet.
Starting is progress. The next measure is what those businesses make possible for the women who build them.
As the business grows, the founder’s job has to change.
The skills that get a business off the ground aren’t the same as the ones you need to build a company that can stand on its own 2 feet.
Once you pass 6 figures, the work is no longer only about finding clients and delivering something valuable. It’s about building a commercially strong company around that value.
That means learning how to:
- ✓Read your business data
- ✓Understand what’s genuinely profitable
- ✓Allocate money and resources well
- ✓Set clear priorities
- ✓Design roles and accountability
- ✓Lead people through growth
These are practical, learnable skills.
They’re not personality traits you either have or you don’t. Struggling with them doesn’t mean you’re not cut out to run a bigger business.
You weren’t born knowing how to drive a car. You learned what the controls did, practised making decisions and gradually became able to handle more complicated situations.
- ✓You can learn to lead a P&L.
- ✓You can learn to read what the numbers are telling you.
- ✓You can learn to decide where the business should invest.
- ✓You can learn to build a team that owns outcomes rather than returning every question to you.
- ✓You can learn to lead the whole company, not just perform the work that started it.
You don’t need to become a different kind of person. You simply need the opportunity to build a different set of skills.
It’s no surprise that many women don’t have these skills yet.
We develop commercial judgement by being given responsibility for budgets, operations, resources and business performance. Women haven’t had equal access to the roles where that learning happens.
In 2000, women held just 2% of P&L-facing executive committee roles in FTSE 350 companies. By 2024, that percentage had reached 19%.
Women have therefore been far less likely to spend their careers in roles where these skills are developed, practised and modelled.
It’s entirely normal for a highly capable woman to leave her career with deep professional expertise, build a successful business around it and then reach a point where she’s being asked to lead a whole company without ever having been in an environment where she could learn how.
No one has failed to pick up something obvious.
You simply reach a job you haven’t been taught to do yet.
When we recognise that, we can stop treating the problem as a personal deficiency and do something practical about it.

Let’s clear something up.
6-figure business leaders are impressive. Full stop.
6-figure women don’t need more courage, intelligence, resilience or confidence to work things out. Confidence grows as competence is built.
Telling women to be more courageous won’t teach them how to evaluate margin, allocate resources, design decision rights or build a management rhythm.
What we need now are hard, practical company-building skills.
How do you increase revenue without increasing your workload at the same rate?
Which work is genuinely profitable?
Where should the business invest its money and attention?
What should remain your responsibility and what must become the company’s?
How do you build a team that can make decisions, maintain standards and move the business forward without everything returning to you?
These questions have answers.
The skills can be taught.
So let’s stop wondering whether women are cut out for this and start building the capability to do it.
- Expertise
- Offer
- Audience
- Marketing
- Sales
- Delivery
- Direction
- Commercial model
- Profit and cash
- Priorities and resources
- Roles and ownership
- Leadership and operations
Freedom isn’t waiting at the next revenue milestone.
It’s easy to believe that more revenue will solve the problem.
-
01
More sales will fund the hire.
-
02
The hire will reduce the workload.
-
03
The team will create capacity.
-
04
The systems will make everything easier.
But revenue, employees and systems don’t automatically create a business that works without its founder.
If the business remains dependent on you, growth simply increases the weight of that dependency.
Freedom has to be built into the company.
It comes from the choices you make about the business model, the economics, the work the company can own, the decisions other people can make and the role you want to have.
The goal isn’t necessarily the biggest company you can build. It’s the company that can deliver the money, impact and life you wanted your business to make possible.
This is the work we do inside CALMM.
CALMM helps women turn successful founder-dependent businesses into commercially strong companies that don’t need them at the centre of everything.
We work on the real business: its numbers, model, priorities, people, decisions and operations.
You learn to understand what’s happening, make stronger commercial choices and build the capability the company needs beyond you.
There’s no question that you’ve already built something valuable. Now it needs to become capable of giving value back to you.
What you need
Practical commercial skills
The skills to understand the business, make good decisions and lead more than your own work.
How you build them
Learn them and use them
Learn each skill, apply it directly to your business and practise it alongside women doing the same.
What that gives you
A stronger business
A business that can grow, pay you properly and work without needing everything from you.
You can start building this now. You don’t need to wait until the business is bigger or until you feel more ready.
Learn the skills. Use them in your business. Build a company that gives you more money, impact and choice as it grows.
More women starting is progress.
The real progress is more women building profitable, valuable companies that give them genuine choice.
- ✓Pay them properly
- ✓Perform without consuming every available hour
- ✓Have value beyond the founder’s personal labour
- ✓Give them the strength to keep, grow, reshape or sell
That’s why CALMM exists. To help women build companies that return genuine profit, value and freedom.
